Why buy a used Toyota Yaris Cross?
Introduced into the Yaris family in 2021, the Toyota Yaris Cross is a compact SUV that shares a significant portion of its mechanics with the popular Toyota Yaris hatchback. This popularity has continued into the Yaris Cross, named the 2022 World Urban Car of the Year.
The Yaris Cross features a larger outer shell than the standard Yaris, and benefits from a spacious interior that competes against competitors within the small SUV segment.
At MOTORS, we work with an extensive network of car supermarkets as well as officially-franchised, specialist and independent dealerships to help you find a used Toyota Yaris Cross that's the right match for you.

Powertrains
Powering the Yaris Cross is a 1.5-litre petrol engine supported by a self-charging hybrid system. In total, the Yaris Cross produces 114 bhp, with the electric motors providing a nice wave of power during acceleration. Notably, the car can run on electric power alone at speeds of up to 80 mph, saving a lot of fuel in the process. Thanks to the self-charging hybrid system, the Yaris Cross can achieve up to 64 mpg, making it one of the most fuel-efficient used SUVs on the market.
For those seeking a bit more capability, a four-wheel drive version of the Yaris Cross is available, which features upgraded independent suspension to help tackle wet and bumpy terrain. This version also includes a limited-slip differential, which more effectively distributes available engine power to provide more grip on slippery surfaces.
The Yaris Cross also features B (engine braking) mode thanks to the hybrid system. Best used when descending steep hills, the car uses regenerative braking to slow the vehicle down while charging the electric batteries.
Practicality
The Yaris Cross has a high-up driving position, making it easy to get in and out of as well as improving visibility on the road. The rear seats comfortably fit two adults and accommodate a third, but it might be a tight squeeze. Thanks to the high roofline, rear passengers have plenty of headroom, but legroom can feel slightly tighter for taller adults.
Loading cargo into the car is made easy thanks to foldable read seats, which increase the space in the rear from the already decent 397-litre boot. Those opting for the four-wheel drive option should note rear boot space is slightly compromised by 70 litres to accommodate the additional mechanical components. In line with most of its competitors, the Yaris Cross features two ISOFIX child seat anchor points in the rear.
Safety
Scoring a 5-star safety rating by the Euro NCAP, the Yaris Cross is fitted with a number of safety features, including Toyota's safety sense technology which helps to prevent collisions and keep drivers safe.
The Safety Sense package includes Road Sign Assist, which reads road signs and tells you the speed limit on the dashboard's display. Lane trace assist, automatic high beam and a pre-collision warning system are also included as standard.
Technology
Tech features include a digital driver's display instead of a traditional speedometer, providing you with more information (if you want it). Drivers can also expect Apple car play and Android Auto as standard, as well as a 6-speaker sound system and rear-view camera.
Intelligent radar-guided cruise control is standard across the range too, as well as automatic air conditioning, automatic lights and wipers, and a multi-function steering wheel.
Used Toyota Yaris Cross FAQ's
What's the difference between the Yaris and the Yaris Cross?
While the styling and raised ground clearance of the Yaris Cross are the obvious differences between the two models, the Yaris Cross is also longer and wider than the standard Yaris. Despite this, the two models share many of the same parts and technology, such as the hybrid powertrain. The Yaris Cross offers more room in the back seats and in the boot, making it ideal for school runs and family life in general. Furthermore, the optional four-wheel drive variant with upgraded suspension is more suited to those seeking sure-footedness in wet conditions.
How do you charge the battery on a Yaris Cross?
Unlike other electric and hybrid cars, the Yaris Cross is self-charging and eliminates the need to plug in and charge the vehicle manually. Its self-charging capability is achieved by two main inputs; the petrol engine and regenerative braking. The petrol engine powers the generator, which charges the battery. Regenerative braking captures energy usually wasted under braking and re-distributes it to the battery.
Can the Yaris Cross run on electric only?
Yes, the Yaris Cross can run on electric power alone for short distances, greatly improving fuel economy when travelling at lower speeds. It's capable of reaching an impressive 80 mph in EV mode, but this mode is more suited to in-town driving. The car will activate the petrol engine automatically as it needs to, either to provide more acceleration power or to charge the hybrid batteries.
How far can a Toyota Yaris Cross go on a full tank?
While it depends on driving style and how much you can use the regenerative braking, the Yaris Cross will travel 559 miles on a full fuel tank on average. This is very competitive compared to its rivals like the Ford Puma, which does not have a full hybrid system (only mild hybrid) and only goes around 378 miles on a full tank.
Is the Yaris Cross smaller than the C-HR?
Yes, the Yaris Cross is shorter in length than the C-HR but sits slightly higher off the ground. Furthermore, the C-HR has more cargo space than the Yaris Cross. However, the Yaris Cross is similar in size to its competitors, such as the Nissan Juke.
What is the MPG of Yaris Cross?
In Toyota's real-world fuel economy test, the two-wheel drive Yaris Cross reached 60.1mpg on average. This mpg can vary on the driving style and many other factors, but it outperforms the likes of the Ford Puma (52.3mpg) and the Nissan Juke (55.4mpg).
How much is a Toyota Yaris Cross in the UK?
Brand new, the entry-level Yaris Cross starts from around £24,000, whereas the four-wheel drive version with its upgrades will be £30,000+. Used examples can be bought for significantly less than that, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to buy a hybrid SUV.
