First introduced in 1995, the Audi A4 sits in the compact executive segment. Even with the rise of SUVs and crossovers through the years, the A4 continues to be a top seller as Audi has kept the model updated through five generations, with each offering a new level of class and upmarket features.

Audi A4 generations
Fifth Generation (2015 to Present)
In the newest A4 models, the headlights and single-frame grille design from the larger A6 were combined. Audi also enhanced the design so that the drag coefficient would drop to 0.23, making it more aerodynamic and improving the fuel economy as a result. A new 8.3-inch touchscreen was added to the interior to modernise the cabin.
In 2019, Audi released a refreshed design with a bolder style. It also offered a new three-spoke steering wheel and leather seats with the S Line. A subsequent 2020 refresh included six LED blocks for each headlamp design and a restyled lower bumper to increase the air intake.

Fourth Generation (2008 to 2015)
The new A4 was designed to be very different from the previous generation. It arrived on a new platform that was meant to better enable mass distribution. A unique grille and headlight design was also added, even though the basic shape of the car was fairly recognisable.
A 2012 update added a single-frame style to the grille that matched the rest of the Audi lineup, surrounded by chromed trim. A longer bonnet and shorter deck showcased a sloped-down rear windscreen, making it look more like a sports saloon.

Third Generation (2005 to 2009)
The third generation wasn't around for long because it was more of a glorified facelift. It retained its previous platform but had some unique styling elements. The front grille used the same shape as the larger A6 and the back highlighted boomerang-type taillights. It also measured slightly larger than its predecessor, but only because a larger rear bumper was added.
Most of the interior elements remained the same from the second generation, but aluminium trim was added to the dashboard. Some minor updates to the powertrains also occurred.
