Ford released the Ka in 1997, making it the most affordable and smallest car in the brand's line-up at the time. Since then, it has been through two generations and was replaced by the Ka+ in 2016. However, this larger, five-door hatchback model only lasted through 2020 in the UK. All three generations brought innovative technology functions at a lower price than many of their competitors, making it an attractive first vehicle for a young driver or urban commuter.

Engines and transmissions

Petrol- A Ka+ with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine pushes out either 69bhp or 83bhp and a fuel economy of 56mpg.

- Some 2nd generation Ka models offered 1.2-litre petrol engines and 68bhp in various trims.
- A 1.5-litre TDCi Ka+ reached 93bhp and 0-60mph in 11 seconds.
- 2nd generation Ka models were also available in a 1.3-litre TDCi engine with 73bhp.
Practicality
The Ka+ offers more functionality than its previous two generations, thanks to the elongated design. The iconic bubble shape of earlier variants offered some practicality too.
Interior space- Adjustable front seats offer a decent vantage point.
- ISOFIX points are easy to access through rear doors.
- 224-litre boot on 2nd generation Ka models, going up to 270 litres in the Ka+.
- Split rear seats offer more cargo space.
- Maximum 747 litres of storage space available with the back seat down in the Ka.
- Ka+ is a five-door hatchback.
- First and second-generation Ka featured a three-door hatchback design.
Safety
- Expired Euro NCAP safety rating was three stars.
- Adult occupant rating was 73%, while child occupant earned 61%.

Ford KA generations
Third Generation (2016 to 2019)
Ford decided to build on the success of the Ka with a brand-new Ka+ model that was a five-door hatchback. It was larger than the outgoing model and built on the Fiesta platform. The headlights were swept back and the door design remained simple enough to keep the price down.
The interior space was ample for five people, and the centre stack in the dashboard was basic. The controls were easy to use and drivers were able to balance efficiency with modernisation.

Second Generation (2009 to 2016)
The second-generation Ka was built in partnership with Fiat, alongside the 500, the Chrysler Ypsilon and the Panda. Even though it was a three-door hatchback, it featured plenty of space to hold four adults. It had strategically placed curves and angles, which helped the vehicle look larger than it is, along with a short hood.
A two-tone dashboard gave it a modern appeal and the simple controls kept the cost down. While the car was small and didn't offer a lot of rear space for adults, the rear bench could be folded to create a larger boot.

Used Ford KA FAQ's
What is the Ford SportKa?
In 2003, Ford released the SportKa, which had a 1.6-litre petrol motor to create 93bhp. It hit 62mph in less than 10 seconds and featured a wider wheel arch for a more aggressive appearance.
Which is the most popular engine in the Ford Ka?
When the Ka was discontinued, it came with one powertrain that could be tuned in two different ways. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine is capable of putting out either 69bhp or 83bhp, yet both variants are rated at 56 mpg in terms of fuel economy.
Which are the most popular trim levels?
The Ford Ka+ was offered in two distinct trim levels: Studio and Zetec. The base Studio model received 15-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth and electric front windows, while the more popular Zetec added air conditioning, a 4.2-inch screen and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Is the Ford Ka a good family car?
Earlier models have two doors, making it more difficult to get into the back seat. With the Ford Ka+, back doors were added, so it's easier to install child seats or fit kids in the rear. There's also enough boot space to hold a couple of luggage bags.
Is there a hybrid version of the Ford Ka?
Over the years, Ford offered the Ka in either petrol or diesel variants, but never included a hybrid powertrain. Newer Ka+ models only come with a petrol configuration.
What style of transmission does the Ford Ka have?
The Ford Ka+ uses a five-speed manual transmission, which allows for smooth gear transitions in the city.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
No, all Ford Ka models include front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive wouldn't be necessary for this city car, as it's not meant for off-roading or travelling on uneven surfaces.
