Volkswagen Tiguan generations

VW debuted the Tiguan in 2007, making it the second SUV from the company following the Touareg. Right out of the gate, it received praise for being practical and comfortable. Starting in 2009, the lineup offered the R-Line as a variant with sporty styling.

The second generation built on the already-enjoyed success with some exciting technology and styling updates.

With a third generation rolled out in 2024, the updates continued, including more efficient powertrains and plug-in hybrid variants, to ensure that one of VW's most popular models remained stylish but also adapts to the needs of modern drivers.

Third Generation (2024 to Present)

More styling cues have been taken from the larger Touareg model, providing a cohesive brand lineup. With no large grille above the bumper, the Tiguan does have a unique appearance, but there's a lower one that helps to cool down the engine, along with the side scoops. The LED headlights now have an angular stance that accentuates the perfectly sculpted doors for a muscular look.

The cabin of the Tiguan is more luxurious than it has ever been, with a large 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a beautiful touchscreen infotainment system that is either 12.9 or 15 inches, depending on the trim. With the comfort of the front seats increased, the Tiguan is ready for the longest drives.

Second Generation (2016 to 2023)

At the 2015 Frankfurt Motorshow, VW debuted the second-generation Tiguan on the MQB platform, which created a wider SUV that moved it away from looking like a hatchback. The minimalistic cabin provided a space for everything without being too overwhelming.

With a 2020 refresh, the R was released with a high-powered engine that could keep up with the most popular hot hatches. Its wider grille and unique styling helped the variant stand out from the rest of the lineup.

First Generation (2008 to 2016)

The release of the SUV based on the Passat hit the streets in 2008, with many people believing that it was created from the Golf. As a practical model, the crossover offered drivers the spacious cabin they desired, along with capability and performance.

In 2009, the R-Line was released with a sporty image and updated styling. It had the most powerful engine of the lineup at the time. With a 2011 refresh, all Tiguan models received a minor facelift that included L-shaped lights in the rear and better safety kit.

With such a spacious interior and customisable options, the Tiguan remains one of the most popular crossovers on the road. Yet it does have a higher price than some of its rivals, so it's important to weigh the pros and cons carefully.

Does the VW Tiguan have good resale value?

Yes – because the Tiguan is a desirable vehicle, it maintains a good resale value. It doesn't seem to suffer from massive depreciation, but it's important to care for the vehicle so that it sells for more.

Which Tiguan is top of the range?

It gives you the best of both worlds; full automatic shifting and the ability to manually change gears when feel the need.

What does it mean if a Tiguan has a TSI engine?

TSI stands for Turbocharge Stratified Injection, which is a type of turbocharged petrol engine that Volkswagen produces. These engines have increased power and torque and do not suffer from lag when accelerating, creating a responsive and fun driving experience. They are also capable of improved fuel economy compared to larger engines.
