Audi spent time creating a supermini that could compete against the MINI Hatch, and released the A1 in 2010. With its upmarket styling and well-built design, the A1 became a popular vehicle almost immediately. Now in its second generation, Audi continues to revise the powertrains and features, ensuring that it remains a top choice among discerning drivers.

Engines and transmissions
While the newest lineup only includes petrol options, the A1 has also been available with diesel in the past. Drivers can also choose from a manual or an automatic gearbox, and front or four-wheel drive.
Petrol- 25 TFSI uses a 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine to create 93bhp for an efficiency rating of up to 51.4mpg.
- 30 TFSI upgrades the power output to 108 or 114bhp and increases the efficiency to around 50mpg.
- 1.5-litre four-cylinder (35 TFSI) increases the power even more, creating 147bhp, with a 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds.
- S Line Competition uses the 40 TFSI to create 197 or 204bhp.
- First-generation TDI diesel models came in either 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre guise for power between 103bhp and 140bhp, and fuel economy of around 60mpg.
Practicality
As a supermini, the A1 doesn't have the same amount of space as larger vehicles, but it's practical enough for the segment and offers class-leading comfort.
Interior space- Available driver's seat lumbar support provides more comfort on longer drives.
- Rear seats can easily hold two adults.
- Two ISOFIX mounting points for securing child seats.
- 335-litre boot is much larger than the MINI.
- Folding the rear seats flat creates 1,090 litres of boot space.
- Wide hatchback offering allows for easier loading and unloading.
- Three-door hatchback was only available during the first generation.
- Five-door hatchback (Sportback) has been available since partway through the first generation.
Safety
- 2019 Euro NCAP rating is a perfect five stars.
- Adult occupant rating tops the charts at 95%.
- Standard safety kit includes the Audi Pre-sense technology with front pedestrian alert, cyclist recognition and automatic emergency braking.
Technology
- 10.3-inch digital driver display gives the cabin a high-tech feel.
- 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen is user-friendly.
- Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and DAB radio.
Audi A1 generations
Second Generation (2018 to Present)
Audi discontinued the three-door hatchback model when releasing the new A1. The company also made the decision to discontinue all diesel engines, replacing them with petrol only. The size of the A1 was increased significantly, which gave it more interior room and boot space.
The angular lines and sharp curves of the A1 became reminiscent of the 1984 Sport Quattro rally car, especially with the horizontal slats found on the bonnet edge. A special model was released, known as the Black Edition, that added some unique black exterior styling touches.

First Generation (2010 to 2018)
When it was first released, the A1 came as a three-door hatchback, but a five-door model was added just a couple of years later, giving customers more options. The platform was shared with the VW Polo (Mk5) and SEAT Ibiza (Mk4), giving it a reliable build. The difference was in the high-end features added to the Audi lineup.
The Sport models were offered with a softer suspension for better handling. There was also a special-edition A1 Quattro model offered. However, with only 333 built, the UK only received about 20 of them, making it very rare.

Used Audi A1 FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Audi A1?
There haven't been a lot of diesel engines offered with the A1, making the petrol motors more popular. The S Line Competition has the 40 TFSI, which produces 197bhp or 204bhp for the fastest acceleration times.
What are the most popular trim levels?
The new A1 comes in Sport, S Line and Black Edition trims. The S Line is the most popular used trim because of the value it provides while still offering some updated features and technology. This includes a sportier body kit and suspension, along with larger 17-inch alloy wheels.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Customers should look out for the Technology Pack with its immersive SONOS 3D premium sound system, Phonebox light with wireless device charging and heated front seats. This package also comes with advanced safety equipment, such as a high-tech reversing camera and the parking system plus technology.
Is the Audi A1 a good family car?
Even though the A1 is a compact hatchback, it's still practical enough for smaller families. Adults are able to fit in the rear seat, and there's a good amount of boot space available. With the upgraded technology, even longer drives can be enjoyable.
Is there a hybrid version of the Audi A1?
Even though Audi has been a leader in the hybrid and EV market, the A1 doesn't have any electrified powertrains yet.
Is the Audi A1 available as an automatic?
Some engines were available with an automatic gearbox, but they aren't as popular as the manual transmissions. However, customers should be able to find either in the used market.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
Most Audi A1 models have standard front-wheel drive. Because four-wheel drive was a rare option, there aren't many available on the used market. For typical driving conditions in the city or on the motorway, front-wheel drive is capable and provides good handling.
