Since the original release of the Mazda 2 in 2002, Mazda has produced a total of four generations and several facelifts, all of which have created a more modern city car that is enjoyable to drive.

Engines and transmissions
Mazda has built the 2 with diesel, petrol and hybrid engine configurations over the years. These engines are paired to front-wheel drive and either a manual or an automatic gearbox.
Petrol- SKYACTIV-G uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine to create 73, 88 or 113bhp, returning an efficiency rating of around 58mpg, depending on the variant.
- 88bhp E-SKYACTIV G adds mild-hybrid technology to boost the efficiency to 60.1mpg and reduce CO2 emissions to 107g/km.
- Earlier models had a 73 or 82bhp 1.3-litre with an efficiency rating of around 55mpg or a 101bhp 1.5-litre with a 49mpg rating.
- 1.5-litre self-charging hybrid configuration on the latest generation is capable of up to 74mpg on average.
- Earlier diesel models had a 103bhp 1.5-litre diesel engine that could achieve up to an 83mpg fuel economy rating.
- Older 1.6-litre engine generated 88bhp for an 11.0-second 0-60mph time and a rating of up to 67mpg.
Practicality
Even though it's a small car, the Mazda 2 has more interior space than expected and remains nimble and agile due to its compact size.
Interior space- Adjustable driver's seat allows for better positioning and visibility.
- Back seat isn't designed to hold adults on long drives, but accommodates children well enough.
- Two outer rear seats have ISOFIX mounts for installing child seats.
- 280-litre boot holds a few bags with the rear seats up.
- 60:40 split rear seats tip forward to increase the cargo room to 950 litres.
- Three-door hatchback gives the city car a more sporty appeal.
- Five-door hatchback makes it easier to get into the back seats, so it's the preferable option for families.
Safety
- 2020 Euro NCAP rating is a perfect five stars.
- All four ratings are good: adult occupant (86%), safety assist (85%), child occupant (81%) and vulnerable road users (78%).
- Standard safety kit includes six airbags, cruise control and hill start assist.
Technology
- 8.0-inch colour touchscreen display is easy to read.
- Available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be connected wirelessly.
- Newer models have an integrated satellite navigation system.
Mazda 2 generations
Fourth Generation (2022 to Present)
With the release of a new generation, the Mazda 2 became a rebadged Toyota Yaris as the companies worked together for production. This new lineup made the 2 a hybrid car only, which was an area where Mazda had previously been lacking.
The 2's sporty look with swept-back headlights made it look like one of the other cars from the lineup, either the CX-5. It also featured piano-black elements, including the roof, door mirrors and grille, for added sleekness.

Third Generation (2015 to 2022)
The Mazda 2 was given a totally new appearance with a sporty appeal for the third iteration of the marque. Added curved surfaces made it look like a premium model, even though it was extremely affordable. Sharing a lot of design elements with the Mazda 3, the new 2 also had a big grille on the front and larger openings in the bumper.
A 2019 refresh gave the Mazda 2 new bumpers, headlights and a grille for a more stylish appearance. New colour schemes were also added to the cabin for more personalisation.

Second Generation (2007 to 2015)
The second-generation Mazda 2 shared a platform with the Ford Fiesta but was given unique touches to differentiate it. Its sharp angles and curved lines added a new appeal to the lineup. Sharper-looking headlights were mounted on top of the bumper, and the overall style helped it to fit with the larger Mazda 3 and Mazda 6.
In the cabin, the dashboard had a black/silver blend that enhanced its look. Also, Mazda continued working on making the lightweight car more fuel efficient.
