Renault Clio generations
Fifth Generation (2019 to Present)
Even though it's visually similar to the previous Clio, this generation was designed to offer a more upmarket feel and so was fitted with a plush interior. The company also released a hybrid model, known as the Clio E-Tech, featuring a smooth and highly efficient powertrain.
The all-new Clio has been regarded as more responsive and quieter overall than previous models. The boot space also increased slightly, leaving a little less rear seat room.

Fourth Generation (2013 to 2019)
At the start of this model, Renault discontinued the three-door hatchback and estate bodystyles due to low sales. Those changes meant that the popular R.S. model would become a five-door hatchback and only come with an automatic gearbox. Renault also streamlined the engine options, leaving every Clio with a turbocharged motor.
A facelift occurred in 2016 with slightly updated exterior styling. The range was also cut down in 2018, leaving just three trims: Play, Iconic and GT Line.

Third Generation (2005 to 2012)
Starting in 2005, the size of the Clio was increased, providing more interior room for the driver and passengers. The interior was adorned with more luxurious materials, though they will feel slightly outdated compared to modern iterations of the Clio. Comfort was the focus, with drivers reporting a smoother ride and more enjoyable driving experience.
Some powertrain changes occurred in 2007, with the addition of a 1.2-litre turbo engine for better fuel economy and optimal performance. A mild facelift followed in 2009, along with new interior plastics for an improved appearance and a refreshed nose design.

Used Renault Clio FAQ's
Which is the most popular engine in the Renault Clio?
The standard 1.0-litre petrol engines have been the most popular among Clio owners, likely because they are also the least expensive option. Diesel powertrains have earned a good reputation from drivers looking for more efficiency, but the newest hybrid is also gaining in popularity.
Which are the most popular trim levels?
Throughout the years, there have been many different trim levels available, such as the Play, Iconic, S Edition, R.S. Line, R.S. Line Bose Edition and the E-Tech. The Iconic has proven most popular among Clio owners with the extra features such as upgraded infotainment system and rear-parking sensors.
What optional extras should I look out for?
Look out for models with the 9.3-inch touchscreen display, which offers clearer graphics as well as a satnav feature for finding new locations with ease. Available rear parking sensors remain a top choice for drivers who need to navigate tight spaces in the city.
Is the Renault Clio a good family car?
As a supermini, the Clio doesn't offer as much room as a people carrier, but it's larger than expected. Three children can fit in the back seat and there are ISOFIX points for car seats. Ample boot space is also helpful for transporting luggage or groceries.
Is there a hybrid version of the Renault Clio?
Yes, the most recent generation of Clio comes with a hybrid option. The E-Tech has a 1.6-litre engine working with an electric motor and a 1.2kWh battery to create a combined output of 142bhp. It's quickly becoming one of the most popular engine options.
Is the Renault Clio available as an automatic?
Yes, there are used Clio models with an automatic gearbox. This option is helpful if you don't want to worry about shifting gears while navigating new roads. There are also manual gearbox models available, which tend to be more cost-effective.
Is there a four-wheel drive version available?
No, Renault hasn't made a Clio with four-wheel drive. Instead, all models include front-wheel drive, which is typical for a supermini.
