Engines and transmissions

Volvo offers an extensive option of engines – petrol, hybrid and diesel. These are paired to an automatic gearbox (manual was only offered for a short time) and standard four-wheel drive.

Petrol

2.0 B5 outputs 246bhp for a 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 112mph.
2.0 B6 produces 295bhp, reducing the 0-60mph time to 6.5 seconds, but still with a 112mph top speed.
Newer 2.0 T8 plug-in hybrid configuration generates 448bhp with a 0-60mph time of 5.2 seconds and up to 55 miles of electric-only travel.
Older 2.0 T8 is a plug-in hybrid configuration creating 401bhp for a 5.3-second 0-60mph time, plus 27 miles of electric-only travel.
First-generation variants included a 3.2-litre V6 engine that produced 234bhp.

Diesel

2.0 D5 offers 231bhp with a top speed of 137mph and a 0-60mph time of 7.6 seconds, with an efficiency rating of 36.7mpg.
Earlier diesel variants included a 197bhp 2.0-litre and a 182bhp 2.4-litre.

Practicality

With a seven-seater configuration, the XC90 is a practical family car that provides passengers with a great deal of space and luxurious surroundings.

Interior space

Front seats are highly adjustable and very supportive.
Middle row has three individual seats that slide and recline for optimal comfort.
Middle row folds easily to allow access to the third row, which is sized for children or smaller adults.
ISOFIX anchor points secure child seats.

Boot space

302 litres of boot space with all seven seats in use, which is larger than the Land Rover Discovery.
Folding down the third row increases the space to 680 litres, more than the Mercedes-Benz GLE and BMW X5.
PHEV reduces the boot space slightly to 260 litres (back) and 640 litres (after second row).
Putting down all the back seats creates 1,951 litres of space.

Safety

Perfect five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2015.
Adult occupant rating is 97%.
Safety assist rating is 94%, with child occupant rating at 87%.
Standard kit includes low-speed automatic braking, lane departure warning, distance alert, traffic sign recognition, stability control and automatic headlight levelling.

Before the release of the XC90 in 2002, Volvo was known for making luxury estates and saloons, but the company quickly became competitive in the SUV segment, making a name for itself. Through two generations, the XC90 continues to be a superb choice for families who desire a luxurious experience. The company continues to release updates, ensuring that the SUV remains a desirable option.

First Generation (2002-2014)

Volvo released a large SUV, known as the XC90, in 2002. At first glance, it looked rugged, but with its seven-seater configuration, it was designed from the ground-up to be suitable for families.

A facelift arrived in 2007 with clear-glass headlamps and redesigned taillights. Volvo also offered various petrol and diesel engines, ensuring that every driver had access to a model that suited their needs.

Second Generation (2015 to 2021)

Even though the first generation was popular, Volvo released a new-generation XC90 in 2014 to keep the technology and styling relevant. All of the engines were overhauled as Volvo sought to move towards sustainability. One of the upgraded materials used was a crystal gearshift lever that enhanced the appearance of the cabin.

In 2019, Volvo released a mild refresh filled with high-end materials, including a key wrapped in premium Nappa leather. Even with the upgraded touches, the cabin still featured a minimalistic design.
