The Vauxhall Ampera arrived on the UK market in 2010 and is a front-wheel-drive, five-door, four-seat, small family hatchback.
The key point about the Ampera, however, is that it is an electric car that switches to its 1.4L four-cylinder petrol engine when the batteries run out of charge. The petrol engine is able to power the electric motor that drives the car and recharge the batteries at the same time. This way it can extend the car's range without turning it into a full petrol-powered car.
The Ampera's batteries can only guarantee a maximum 40-mile range on their own but, with the help of the petrol engine, Vauxhall claims the maximum cruise range extends to more than 300 miles. The batteries can be recharged from a mains socket in about six hours using a 240-volt/10amp outlet.
Quoted top speed is 100mph, with the standard 0-60mph acceleration taking less than nine seconds.
The boot space is 300 litres and can be extended up to 1,000 litres when the split-folding rear seats are folded flat.
