Engines and transmissions

Petrol
  • 1.8-litre provides the entry point with 138bhp, creating a 0-60mph time of 11.1 seconds and getting near 40mpg.
  • 1.4-litre turbocharged engine also makes 138bhp.
  • 1.5-litre turbocharged engine creates between 138bhp and 162bhp, depending on the trim.
  • Earlier 1.6-litre turbocharged motors earn a rating of between 108bhp and 197bhp, depending on the trim level.
  • 2.0-litre is the fastest four-cylinder petrol, outputting between 197bhp and 246bhp, depending on the trim, and offering a 0-60mph time of between 6.9 and 7.5 seconds.
  • High-performance VXR variant is tuned for 320bhp.
Diesel
  • 1.5 litre diesel engine makes between 120bhp and 162bhp, depending on the trim level.
  • 1.6-litre created 108bhp (least powerful) with an efficiency rating of 57.6mpg, but was later retuned for 134bhp.
  • 2.0-litre could be found with a single turbocharger, making 167bhp, or a twin-turbo design rated at 207bhp.

Practicality

The Vauxhall Insignia is a practical car, whether it's for family drives or executive travel, due to its spacious cabin and accommodating boot.

Interior space
  • Front seats offer plenty of adjustment options, allowing for the most comfortable drive.
  • Sloping roofline only cuts into the rear headroom slightly, but still makes room for two adults in the back.
  • Rear ISOFIX points secure child seats easily.
Boot space
  • Grand Sport has a 490-litre boot, but this extends to 1,450 litres with the rear seat down.
  • Sports Tourer estate increases the boot size to 560 litres, which is more than the Mazda 6 Tourer and Ford Mondeo Estate.
  • Boot size is practical, allowing for optimal usage.
Bodystyles
  • Four-door saloon was one of the original designs.
  • Five-door hatchback has a tailgate lid.
  • Estate model extends the boot space.

Safety

  • Euro NCAP gave the Insignia a perfect five-star rating in 2017.
  • Adult occupant rating is 93%, with the child occupant rating reaching 85%.
  • Available safety systems include lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking and traffic sign recognition.

Technology

  • 8-inch touchscreen display can be voice-controlled.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto boost connectivity.
  • Available Bose premium stereo system improves sound clarity.

Vauxhall Insignia video review

Different generations of used Vauxhall Insignia

First arriving in 2008, the Vauxhall Insignia was designed to usher in a period of improved design, quality and engineering for the Vauxhall brand. The Insignia instantly achieved success as it was refined, modern and attractive. While a second generation of the car was launched in 2017, Vauxhall decided to discontinue production in 2022 to focus on SUVs and electric cars.

Second Generation (2017 to 2022)

The Insignia Grand Sport was completely revised for the new generation with sporty styling and sleek, sharp lines. The front end became narrower, and the LED headlights were angled differently to create a more aggressive appearance. Vauxhall also used a longer wheelbase than with the first-generation Insignia, creating more space.

The seating was revised at the same time, adding more comfort to the front seats as well as electrically adjustable options. Because of the longer wheelbase, rear passengers were provided with extra leg and head room, even with the sloping roofline design.

First Generation (2009 to 2017)

Originally, Vauxhall thought of using the Vectra name and starting a new generation but eventually ended up creating a new car and giving it the 'Insignia' nameplate instead. Vauxhall scrapped its existing plans and started from the ground up because a larger vehicle was needed. Originally offered in three body styles – the saloon, hatchback and estate – the lineup was complete.

In 2013, a refresh occurred with redesigned headlights and new LEDs. A broader grill with three horizontal bars, and a lower bumper housed bigger side intakes surrounded by chromed trim were used. Inside the cabin, Vauxhall ensured an ergonomic design to the seats, providing more support and comfort.

Used Vauxhall Insignia FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Vauxhall Insignia?

The diesel engines were far more popular than the petrol models. Among used cars, it's easy to find an Insignia with the 2.0-litre engine, either with a single turbocharger creating 167bhp or with the twin-turbo setup for 207bhp.

Which are the most popular trim levels?

Vauxhall offered the Insignia in several trim levels: Design, SRi, SRi VX-Line Nav, Tech Line Nav, Elite Nav and GSi Nav. The most popular is the SRi, which is a step up from the base level, offering dual-zone climate control, active front seats, a sporty rear spoiler and ambient LED lighting.

What optional extras should I look out for?

With the Insignia, there are a lot of tech upgrades available, such as satnav or a premium stereo system. Customers should also look out for leather upholstery and heated front seats.

Is the Vauxhall Insignia a good family car?

Yes, with several body styles and plenty of high-tech features, the Insignia was designed with families in mind. All models have a spacious cabin and an accommodating boot for holding plenty of cargo.

Is there a hybrid version of the Vauxhall Insignia?

No, the Insignia was discontinued in 2022 before Vauxhall equipped it with any hybrid powertrains.

Is the Vauxhall Insignia available as an automatic?

Some engine variants are available with an automatic gearbox, but they are not as popular as the manual configurations. Customers looking for a used Insignia with an automatic may have to search a little harder, and the cost may be slightly higher.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

Vauxhall didn't make a lot of Insignia models with four-wheel drive, but there are some available; they are just more difficult to find than the standard front-wheel drive options. In most driving situations, front-wheel drive is going to be sufficient.
