Different generations of used Vauxhall Meriva

The Vauxhall Meriva was launched in 2003, based on the same platform as the Corsa. This compact MPV has been through two generations and several updates to ensure that it remained stylish and well-equipped. Up until it was discontinued in 2017, Vauxhall continued to refine and reconfigure the powertrains, offering several choices to consumers.

First Generation (2003-2010)

Drivers wanted a family-friendly MPV that was small yet spacious, so Vauxhall released the Meriva in 2003. It was based on the Corsa, but it was made taller to give it the same dimensions as some of the top MPVs. It had a black grille topped with the company's chrome V-shaped emblem, and the vertical headlights helped the model look even taller.

Inside the cabin, the high-mounted seats were meant to provide a better view. The interior seating was among the highlights of this model, but enthusiasts also loved the availability of different engines.

Second Generation (2010 to 2017)

Even though the second-generation Meriva still had elements of the smaller Corsa in its design, there were some new features that set it apart. Vauxhall added bigger headlights and an upgraded grille with a chromed bar. The lower grille ended up forming a smiling face with its side scoops. There were still several engine options available.

In 2014, Vauxhall released its last update for the Meriva. New engines arrived to meet Euro 6 emissions standards and LED bulbs were added to the daytime running lights and taillights. There was also the option to upgrade to 18-inch light-alloy wheels, which were hard to find in this segment.

Used Vauxhall Meriva FAQ's

Which is the most popular engine in the Vauxhall Meriva?

Even though the diesel engines are among the most efficient, the petrol engines have been more popular with Meriva drivers. The 98bhp 1.4-litre keeps the purchase and runnings costs to a minimum, but the turbocharged models have added power for better acceleration, at the expense of fuel economy.

Which are the most popular model variants?

Vauxhall has offered several model variants, including the Life, Club, Tech Line and SE. Of these, the top-spec SE is the most popular with its standard panoramic glass roof, chrome detailing and dark-tinted privacy glass.

What optional extras should I look out for?

Customers should look out for heated front seats, and there are also available parking sensors that help drivers navigate tight spots. There is also a panoramic glass roof that allows more sunlight into the cabin.

Is the Vauxhall Meriva a good family car?

Yes, with five spacious seats and a flexible boot area, the Meriva was specifically built for families. There are also several powertrain options that allow for more choice in regard to output and efficiency.

Is there a hybrid version of the Vauxhall Meriva?

No, Vauxhall didn't make a hybrid engine for the Meriva. The most efficient option is the 1.6 CDTi diesel that produces 108bhp and is supposedly capable of up to 74mpg.

Is the Vauxhall Meriva available as an automatic?

Yes, the Meriva was built with an automatic transmission, but it's not as popular as the manual gearbox. Still, there are plenty of used Vauxhall Meriva models with an automatic transmission, so customers shouldn't have trouble finding one.

Is there a four-wheel drive version available?

No, Vauxhall only made the Meriva with front-wheel drive. This platform ensures better fuel economy making it cheaper to run.
