The Volkswagen Passat diesel is no longer competing against the Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6 and Vauxhall Insignia. Newer Passats now have a premium allure that will see them slipping comfortably next to Audis and BMWs in the executive car park.
The latest Passat is available exclusively with a choice of turbodiesel engines, including a 118bhp 1.6L, a 2L with either 148 or 187bhp as well as a range-topping 2L twin-turbo developing 237bhp that can blast from 0-60mph in just 6.3 seconds while delivering north of 50mpg. Volkswagen also offers an ultra-low-carbon BlueMotion version of the 1.6L.
The Passat has an upmarket interior, which wouldn't look out of place in an Audi. All models come with air-con, electric windows, Bluetooth stereo, electric mirrors and alloys as standard. Pay a little extra and you can expect sat-nav, parking sensors and automatic lights and wipers. Go all out and you'll get climate control, leather upholstery and heated seats.
Volkswagen Passat diesels come in a choice of four-door saloon or five-door estate, each comfortably holding four adults - a fifth passenger will fit in the back but they would have to negotiate a wide transmission tunnel. There's plenty of room for luggage too, with over 580 litres in the back of the saloon and 650 litres in the estate with the seats up.
