The up! first hit the scene in 2012 when it replaced the Volkswagen Fox. It's smaller than the first-generation Golf, and was intended from the outset to be an economical option for city driving. While it's still in its first generation, facelifts occurred in 2016 and 2020 that offered a more modern style and upgraded technologies.

Why buy a used VW up!?
If you're in the market for a small and stylish city car, then a used VW up! is a great option. It provides highly economical motoring with no frills. Even though it's lacking many premium features, it's well-built, comfortable and is meant to last. It's also very practical for its size, and is enjoyable to drive, particularly around town where its small size is at its most useful.
Used Volkswagen up! snapshot review

- Robust and well-built
- Nice to drive

Engines and transmissions
With the newest models, the previous petrol and electric powertrains have been removed, leaving only one powertrain available.
Petrol- 1.0-litre engine creates 64bhp, which is plenty for getting around the city.
- Doesn't offer rapid acceleration, with a 0-62mph time of around 15 seconds.
- Efficiency is the priority, with ratings of around 50mpg, and newer models returning up to 55.4mpg.
Practicality
Even though it's a smaller model, the cabin is well laid out for maximum comfort. It also handles well in the city, making its way into smaller spots with ease.
Interior space- Room to hold four people in relative comfort.
- Driver's seat and steering wheel are adjustable.
- Minimalistic dashboard design.
- 251-litre boot space is cramped but accommodating.
- Split-folding rear seats open up the boot space.
- Boot lip forces users to lift cargo up for loading.
- Three-door hatchback design gives a sporty appearance.
- Five-door hatchback makes it easier to get into the back seats.
Safety
- 2019 Euro NCAP ratings only give the city car a three-star rating.
- It holds up well in crash tests, but lacks some of the active safety technology (such as blindspot monitoring) needed to achieve a higher score
- Only contains mandatory safety equipment.
Technology
- Includes ‘composition phone’ radio for connectivity options.
- 5-inch display is small, but an upgrade over previous models.
- Rear-view camera and parking sensors are available on higher trims.

Used Volkswagen up! FAQ's
Is the Volkswagen up! discontinued?
After being around for 12 years, Volkswagen has announced the end of production for the UP!. Used VW UP! cars can still be found for a reasonable price.
Is the VW up! a good car?
The up! is a top choice for city travel because of the compact design and low price. It has also proven fairly reliable, with only some airbag issues in the earlier years that have now been ironed out. When buying a used UP!, watch out for scrapes and dings from getting in and out of tight parking spaces.
What car is similar to the VW up!?
Built on the same platform, the Skoda Citigo is nearly identical to the VW up!. Both of these city cars showcase a boxy style and a flat back end with very similar interior quality.
Why was the VW up! GTI discontinued?
The GTI hot hatch was removed from sales prior to the standard line-up. The final models sold out so quickly that VW was forced to halt orders, with the automaker underestimating the popularity of the UP! variant.
Is the VW up! fast?
No, the newest UP! models have a small engine designed for efficiency. These 1.0-litre petrol motors can take around 15 seconds to get to 62 mph. Older GTI versions have a stronger engine that make the model more enjoyable to drive.
Does the VW up! have AC?
Some of the earlier models don't come equipped with air conditioning. As an added feature in some UP! trims, it may be more desirable to choose a higher level trim, with some even including climate control.
