The Volvo C30 R Design is billed by Volvo as a four-seater coupe, although in reality it's more of a premium hatchback.
The C30 R Design comes with a choice of four petrol engines: a 99bhp 1.6L, 123bhp 1.8L, 145bhp 2L and a fierce 230bhp 2.5L. There are also four diesel engines: a 1.6 in the standard and frugal DRIVe versions, and a 134bhp or 175bhp 2L. Based on the same platform as the S40 saloon, both grip and handling are solid, although the ride errs on the firm side.
Every R Design comes with an impressive spec including climate and cruise control, electric windows, leather trim and steering wheel-mounted stereo controls. Outside you get lowered suspension and a sporty body kit to give it a more aggressive stance.
The C30 is strictly a four-seater, with two seats separated by an arm rest in the back ensuring there's plenty of shoulder room, although tall passengers may find their heads brushing the roof. The boot is small, and access is hampered by the small opening and high sill.
