The upmarket Volvo's estate was launched in 1996 - the first generation V70 lasting until 2000, and the second until 2007.
All V70 models have five doors. Most are five-seaters but some come with another row of factory fitted seats to make it a seven-seater. There are three petrol engines (the 1.6L T4, turbocharged 2L T5 and the 3L T6), as well as two diesel engines (the 2L D3 and the 2.4L D5) to choose from.
High-performance models have been badged as either the T5 or the V70-R. There's also a bi-fuel model than can run on alternative fuels.
The standard V70 has a sturdy and secure feel that makes it reassuring to drive, particularly on the motorway, where it seems very stable at speed. The load space is huge, of course, and well-shaped, with seats that can fold flat to create a van-like interior. Even the front passenger seat folds flat. Standard equipment is generous and the feel of the switchgear and materials feels durable and refined.
The V70 is the practical, safe and sensible choice for anyone wanting the versatility of an estate, but it's also a high-quality executive car too.
